Past mint prices of US gold bullion?

I was discussing the US economy over time with someone IRL and we began to wonder what the US mint charged for buying gold coins in years past.

The main question we wondered was if during the time that Bretton Woods was in effect, did the US mint sell gold coins for $35/ounce? Or did they charge more.... What US gold coins were available then?

In particular I'd be curious about the years 1950 and 2000, but if anyone has a table of prices over the whole range that's be interesting to see too.

Re: Past mint prices of US gold bullion?

Bill, during Bretton Woods agreement circa 1944 it was illegalfor US citizen to own monetary gold, in part to the criminal act of FDR back in 1934. :thumpdown So the US mint had no gold for sale. It wasn't until 1975 under Ford that Americans were restored their constitutional right to own gold! The 1st new gold coins available from the mint were in the
1980s and I believe it was the 1984 Olympic $5 commemorative coin.:smokin:

Re: Past mint prices of US gold bullion?

I found a page that said the 1950 gold price was ~$40, but I guess that was for foreign coin,,,, I was wondering what US coins were available.... all I was finding on coin dealers sites was really old ones, or fairly recent decades. I thought perhaps I wasn't entering the right name or something....

Thanks!
